6 Study Habits Every Year 12 A-Level Mathematics Student Should Develop

The jump from GCSE Mathematics to A-Level Mathematics can seem very daunting for many Year 12 students. Those who achieved high grades at GCSE suddenly find themselves struggling with questions they don't know how to start. However, there is good news: being confused is part of being a mathematician! When you are learning mathematics, the goal is not to immediately know the final answer, but to know how to get incrementally closer to it.

As a student currently pursuing a Master's degree in Mathematics, and as a mathematics tutor with 7+ years of experience, I have spent a lot of time experimenting with what works and what does not when it comes to becoming a better mathematical learner. Throughout that time, I've found that the students who improve the most are not necessarily the ones who understand everything immediately, but the ones who develop good study habits and stay consistent.

You may have heard: "mathematics is not a spectator sport." The best way to improve at maths is to do maths. Reading textbooks, making notes and watching someone else solve problems all have their place, but they should make up a relatively small portion of your learning compared to attempting questions yourself.

So then, the question becomes: what should you do when you get stuck?

1. Get excited about making mistakes

Attempting questions and getting them wrong, known as error-based learning, is one of the most effective ways to improve your understanding. Every mistake highlights a gap in your knowledge and shows you exactly where your revision should be focused.

Keeping a log of difficult questions throughout Year 12 is a great habit. As you become more confident with topics such as algebra, functions and calculus, return to those questions and attempt them again. Remember the process: attempt the question, check the solution, cover it up, and then try it again yourself. As they say, practice makes perfect!

2. Write down what you know to help break down the problem

It is not uncommon to read through a question (sometimes multiple times) and have no idea where to begin, let alone how to reach the final answer. However, almost every A-Level question gives you something to work with.

Write down the information you have been given, identify any relevant formulae, and translate the words into mathematical information. Think of this as collecting the data before solving the problem. Once everything is organised on paper, it becomes much easier to decide on the next logical step.

Often, simply writing something down is enough to get you moving in the right direction.

3. But don't get stuck in the mud

It's important to manage your revision time and not be bogged down by a particularly difficult question. If you are spending more than 10 minutes trying to figure out how to start, or you keep making the same mistakes, make a note of the question and move on. It is more effective to go back to that problem with a fresh perspective during a later revision session.

4. Teach someone else

There is no better way to discover gaps in your understanding than trying to explain a topic to someone else.

Whether you are explaining differentiation to a classmate or talking through a problem with a family member, teaching forces you to organise your thoughts clearly. If you cannot explain why each step works, that usually highlights an area worth revisiting.

Teaching others strengthens your own mathematical foundations.

5. Manage your expectations

You should not expect to master an entire A-Level topic after spending only three hours on it. Whether you're learning differentiation, logarithms or trigonometry, real understanding develops gradually through consistent practice.

Instead, break your revision into manageable goals. For example, you could aim to complete five targeted questions on one or two sub-topics before moving on. Building understanding gradually is more effective than trying to cover everything in one sitting. Slow and steady progress is the goal!

6. Most importantly, don't be embarrassed to ask for help

After you have made several genuine attempts at a question, worked through your notes and tried the strategies above, don't be afraid to ask for help!

Whether it is your classmates, your teacher or a tutor, asking questions is a normal part of learning mathematics. Even professional mathematicians collaborate with one another when solving difficult problems. Mathematics does not have to be an isolating subject, and often a short conversation can help you understand something that has been frustrating you for hours.


The transition from GCSE to A-Level Mathematics can be challenging, but it is entirely manageable with the right study habits. Remember that making mistakes, asking questions and taking your time to work through problems are all part of becoming a stronger mathematician. By implementing these habits, with consistency and practice, easing into A-Level Mathematics should feel a lot less stressful.
